In June 2007 the students of MA Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art invited Brazilian sound art collective Chelpa Ferro to have their first show in London. Their work is rooted in the Tropicália movement and the histories of musical avant-gardes.
On–Off Poltergeist was an installation at Mezkalito gallery where seven televisions broadcasted out of sync sound extracted from live TV shows. The curators approached us to create a website that would act as a publication featuring essays and documentation from the exhibition and a related performance.
The design of the website takes into account Chelpa Ferro's influences and work produced for the event. The logo, for instance, is misregistrated as a reference to the out of synch TV sounds. The colour scheme comes both from the vibrant colours of Tropicália as well as the default tones of television screens. The home page adopts a "phonetic" navigation to the different sections of the website, referring to Chelpa Ferro's obsession with word sounds (they chose their name mainly because of its sound rather than the meaning, an old colloquial Portuguese term for money).
We also proposed to take full advantage of the web as a platform for the publication and commissioned the artist to produce a specific work. Chelpa Ferro came back to us with You Clip, a collage of found footage and other material produced by the artists.
